Zytanien started in 1987 as a private party; the first stage was an old barn door laid on barrels. Today around 3,000 people come to a former brickworks south-east of Hanover, which the organisers now own themselves. Music plays all over the site: bands from punk to klezmer on the main stage, drum and bass and rave at the Glasgrenze, techno in Ongolito Ville, newcomers at the Weidblick.
In between: hammocks, workshops from yoga to body percussion, a Kinderland kids’ area and a market street. The crowd is alternative and laid-back, from babies to grey hair, and most have been coming back for years. Above all, Zytanien is peaceful: you hardly see any fights, and even if you come on your own, you’re in good hands here.

Check first
- Under-18s only get in with a parent or legal guardian; a signed parental consent note doesn’t count. The site opens on Friday at noon at the earliest, and even with a ticket you can sometimes queue for a long time at the box office.
- Without a car, it’s around a 30-minute walk from Immensen-Arpke station, and there’s no shuttle; if you come by car, expect police checks on the way in and out. Your own drinks, glass above all, stay at your tent; leave generators and loud speakers at home.

- For crews who want to drift between the rave tent, a punk band and a hammock at the end of the season, and don’t mind kids and regulars partying right next to them.
