Tons of Rock is Norway’s big gathering for rock and metal: four days on a meadow high above Oslo, looking out over the city and the fjord. The line-up lives on legends, and in between you’ll stumble across bands you didn’t know in the tent or in front of the Swamp Stage container. Up front the crowd surfs so much that photographers have to leave the pit early, and in 2025 the crowd even carried wheelchair users over their heads.

Since moving from the fortress in Halden, the festival has grown a lot and sold out for the first time in 2026. The price: on hot days there are queues for water and toilets, shade is scarce, and long-time fans find the line-up too mainstream.

Check first

  • Sort out early where you’ll sleep: hotels in Oslo fill up fast that weekend, and the festival camp next door requires a separate ticket and only admits people aged 18 and over. Your own drinks, snacks and camping chairs stay outside; comfortable shoes go on your feet.

  • You want metal legends and new heavy bands in one place, like packed pits with a cheerful crowd rather than trouble, and don’t need to party until morning: the music stops at 11 pm.
