Tønder has been doing folk and roots since 1975, and the old Visemøllen mill, where it all began, is still a concert venue today. Over the years the bill has featured Pete Seeger, John Prine and Emmylou Harris, more recently Lyle Lovett and Fantastic Negrito. But the music isn’t limited to the eight stages: in small bars, the musicians’ bar and jam tents along the festival street, musicians and guests play side by side.

The small town doubles its population over these days, and thousands of volunteers keep it all running. The crowd is on the older side and listens closely, many have been coming back for years, and children get their own area with a sandpit and instruments.

• For small venues such as Pumpehuset, Visemøllen and Bolero you’ll sometimes queue for hours, and while you wait you often miss the concerts happening alongside. Payment is by card or prepaid card only; your own drinks and glass stay outside.
