Here the setting is the star: a new fairy tale every year, a narrator between the sets and, at the very end, a pledge shouted by tens of thousands together.

In the De Schorre recreation park you’ll find stone faces, fountains and a dragon that turns out to be a stage; the main stage has even been a castle. The big stages belong to the stars, from EDM to techno; on the hardstyle or psytrance stages, guests stumble into sets they’d never heard of. On Fridays and Saturdays things wrap up at 1 am, on Sundays at midnight; the party carries on at camp.

The crowd comes from around 200 countries, and before the sets whole countries gather under their flags. DreamVille is a small town for around 38,000 campers, with a supermarket, gym and hairdresser; in the mornings, paperboys on bikes deliver the festival newspaper.

Check first

• Tickets take a waiting room and luck, they’re in your names, and the whole crew has to book the same camping area. Hotel guests often walk three quarters of an hour to the shuttle after closing and rarely get to bed before 3 am.
• In the evening it gets frighteningly tight at times at Freedom, Crystal Garden and on the paths, and pickpockets work the crowds in front of the stages. You can’t bring your own water onto the site, and free refill points there are hard to find.

Right for you

• You want a show, goosebumps and people from all over the world, and you’d rather sleep at camp than in a hotel. Even if you’re over 50, you won’t stand out here.
