Through tunnels and side passages to the next hidden stage, and after three days you still haven’t found them all.
- Fancy-dress Saturday with a letter theme
- Arrive alone, leave with friends
- Its own Working Men’s Club
Beat-Herder began in 2006 as a small rave among friends in the woods and is now a dance festival on a farm near Clitheroe, in the valley below Pendle Hill. Its 16 stages mainly play drum and bass, techno, house, dub and reggae, plus folk, comedy and cabaret. What sets it apart is the setting: a 15-metre corrugated-iron castle with fire from its towers, DJs inside a washing machine and the Toil Trees woodland strung with fairy lights.
Everything is close together: from your tent you’re five to ten minutes from any stage, and you can take your own drinks into the arena. On Friday and Saturday the main stage finishes around midnight, while the smaller ones run until three or four in the morning; on Sunday everything ends around midnight. Many guests have been coming back for years.
At a glance
- Beyond the concerts — Variety · 2 of 3
- A pub, cabaret, a pool and fancy dress alongside the bass. As of 2024
- Nights at the campsite — Depends on the zone · 2 of 3
- Loud near the arena, quieter in the far fields. As of 2026
- Ground after rain — gets muddy · 2 of 3
- Slippery bottlenecks in 2016, wet but walkable in 2023. As of 2023
Check first
- From 2027 it only runs from Friday to Sunday; if you arrive on Thursday, you won’t get in until Friday. Tickets are in your name and checked against ID; you can’t return them, and only if the festival is cancelled do you get the face value back, without the booking fee.
- There’s hardly any phone signal on site and no app, so agree on meeting points beforehand. If you want to sleep, camp far from the arena entrance; close to it, nights get loud.
Right for you
- Would you rather roam from room to room at night than stand in front of a big stage? Then this is Glastonbury in miniature: more close-knit than Boomtown and wilder than Latitude.
