Rocken am Brocken is built every year by festival fanatics with day jobs, on a meadow near Elend right by the Harz National Park: around 300 volunteers, no office, no agency. So a lot of it is handmade: wooden stages, an old circus tent, lampshades on poles as tall as trees. In the evening the site feels like a village in a fairy-tale forest, and in the Zauberwald, the “magic woods”, DJs play among fairy lights and mirrors until dawn.
The bands don’t start until the afternoon; before that you hike with rangers to acoustic concerts in the woods, do yoga or play volleyball. In front of the stage it gets warm-hearted: security dances along and catches crowdsurfers, and during Frittenbude in 2019 the crowd formed a wall of love, hugging instead of shoving. The line-up has a few well-known names like Madsen or Kate Nash and lots of bands you’ll hear here for the first time.

Check first
- Pack wellies: the meadow has no paved paths and turned into a mud field in wet years like 2023 and 2025.
- Children under six aren’t allowed in the concert area, and glass is banned across the whole site, camping area included.
