Since the seventies, Rock Werchter has been Belgium’s big summer festival: four days in early July, around 88,000 people a day, and a poster full of bands that whole fields sing along to, from Foo Fighters to The Cure. What makes it special is the Barn, a huge tent with stands for 20,000: bands rise above themselves in there, and during quiet sets it gets remarkably silent – though a few people still talk through them.

People come here for the music: band shirts and hiking boots instead of a fashion show, fathers with sons, parents with teenagers, lots of Dutch visitors and guests from half of Europe. It’s remarkably tightly run: short queues at the bars and toilets, backed by thousands of volunteers from local clubs. The price of success: on Saturdays the field is packed, shade is scarce, and the food is expensive and rarely good.

Check first

• You choose your camp in advance, and your ticket is only valid for that one. At The Hive the afterparty runs until about four, and neighbours often keep partying; you’ll sleep more quietly at some of the camping areas further out.
• Getting between the Barn and KluB C can take up to 20 minutes, and full tents close their doors: if you want to see a band up close, get there early.

Right for you

• You want the big bands of the summer, sing along on the field and get to the Barn early for a special concert. If you’re coming on your own or bringing your parents, you won’t be the only one.
