Big metal names for everyone who feels Wacken has got too crowded.

Reload brings big metal and hardcore bands to the edge of Sulingen and still stays manageable: 20,000 people, and according to the organisers no more will fit. The two big stages take turns, after each band there are a few minutes to walk across, and you can usually still find a good spot even for the headliner. The line-up features names like Judas Priest, Korn or In Flames, and many bands like coming back. Regulars hope it stays this size.

The festival day starts silly: by tradition a joke band opens, at Gutalax at 9:30 the crowd holds up toilet brushes, and Batman and the Joker regularly crowd-surf over the audience. When it gets hot, security hoses down the front rows and joins the party. All of this is largely run by volunteers, and on the last night fireworks go up over the main stage.

Check first

  • The big stage already plays on Thursday; if you only arrive on Friday, you miss a whole festival day.
  • Allow time for getting there: in 2025 cars were stuck in traffic for hours, in 2026 separate routes made it much better. In hot years the site gets so dusty that black shirts turn brown; a bandana helps.

Right for you

  • For crews who want to see big bands without rushing between stages or squeezing in at the front. Anyone coming alone sits down with a beer next to the tent neighbours, and children aged ten and up can come along if accompanied.
