Norden is a culture festival, not a camping weekend: eight days across two long weekends in the Königswiesen city park, right on the Schlei. Bands like Die Höchste Eisenbahn or Kakkmaddafakka are on the programme, but the culture tent fills up just as much when authors from the North read. On top of that there’s cinema, acrobatics in the circus ring, an art market and workshops.

When it gets dark, the park shows what it can do: jetties, bridges and boats light up, colours change in the light tunnel by the canal, campfires burn in between, and there’s a smell of smoked fish. Toddlers are out and about just as much as grandparents, and the mood stays relaxed rather than wild.

Check first

• There’s no campsite, so sort out a bed or a pitch around the Schlei early. Your own food and drink stay outside; baby food and bottles to refill at the water stations are allowed. Inside, many find the prices high, and at the food stalls you pay almost only in cash.

Right for you

• For you if you’d rather drift between a reading, a concert and the campfire in the evening than stand in front of a stage until morning, and if parents, siblings or kids are coming along.
