The Nation is the festival where Berlin’s techno scene has been getting older since the nineties without settling down: a clearing in a pine forest, a small lake, no sponsors, no advertising banners. The village joins in: the fire brigade grills sausages and hoses down the dancers when it’s hot, and young people from the village DJ alongside the big names.
The party runs from Thursday evening to Monday morning on four floors of techno, electro and house. Many have been coming for decades, the crowd is older than elsewhere, and you hear more Berlin dialect than English. During the day the sun beats down on the meadow; then people escape to the lake, a hammock or the sauna.
