Lowlands is the weekend in late August when half the Netherlands gathers in the polder near Biddinghuizen: around 60,000 people, from the Randstad and the provinces, first-timers and guests in their twentieth year. The line-up puts Lorde and Major Lazer next to Irish bands and a Verdi Requiem, plus theatre, comedy, readings and an entire lane for sex education. Only ticking off your favourites means missing half of it; drift through the tents and you suddenly find yourselves at a concert you had never heard of.

At night everyone crowds into the Bravo, often so full that not everyone gets in. On the campsite, the number decides: Camping 2 and 3 are closest and party around the clock, while beyond the bridge people sleep. And regulars have been saying for decades that it was all better in the old days, then they come back anyway.

Check first

• The car stays in the car park, and with all your gear the walk to your tent often takes half an hour or more; handcarts don't always survive the trip. If you want to camp close to the grounds, be at the gate early on Thursday, because Thursday has long been half a festival day.

Right for you

• You want to drift for three days, between the mosh pit, the comedy tent and the sauna, and you like that nobody cares whether you walk around in your underwear or a crazy hat.
