Line-up

Exams done, tent in the park: for tens of thousands of teenagers, Leeds is their first big festival without their parents.

  • Late-night Alan chants
  • Camp raves till morning
  • Quiet and eco camps

Leeds is the northern half of Reading: largely the same big names in pop, rap, rock and dance, on staggered days, on an old country estate near Wetherby. The crowd is strikingly young: for many 16-year-olds, this weekend is the post-exam ritual. By their early twenties, plenty of people already feel too old here.

If you're under 18, you can't get beer in the arena, so the drinking happens at the tents, and in the evening the camp becomes one huge circle of camping chairs with music. The price: mountains of rubbish, notorious toilets and crowding whenever two headliners draw very different fans.

Check first

  • Plan your last night: for years, tents have been looted and set on fire in some camps on Sunday, so many crews head home straight after the last show.
  • Expect the journey home to take hours: shuttles, taxis and the car park exit all back up after the headliner, and there's barely any signal on site.

Right for you

  • You've just finished school, want to see the big names in pop, rap and guitar music in one weekend, and would rather party at camp afterwards than crawl into your sleeping bag. If you're older, camp in the quieter fields on the edge or come with a day ticket.
