The Printemps de Bourges has no festival site; it has a whole city. For six days in April, bands play the big W tent, halls and theatres, and on top of that there’s free music on squares, in the streets and in almost every bar. You stop at an outdoor stage for one song and stay an hour, meet up on Place Séraucourt and move on to the next gig. At night the bars get packed and beery, and not every local likes this week.
In the W, schoolkids, parents and grey-haired fans sing along to the choruses of French stars; on Fridays and at the electronic nights the crowd gets noticeably younger. If you’re after something new, head to the iNOUïS in the afternoon, the newcomer stage that Christine and the Queens, Eddy de Pretto and Zaho de Sagazan all came through. In the hall, curious listeners sit next to plenty of industry people scouting for talent.
