Klangtherapie started in 2003 as a small techno party with around 300 people; today about 3,000 come to a field near Scherleithen in Franconian Switzerland. It's run independently by volunteers, and anyone who can pay more buys a solidarity ticket that funds a cheaper one for someone on a low income. At heart it's a small Fusion in Franconia: bands, punk and hippie sounds into the evening, techno at night, and it doesn't end until six on Monday morning.

By day the field turns into a workspace: around a hundred workshops, talks, theatre and yoga, some of it donation-based, plus giant soap bubbles and decor made with real love for detail. The crowd mixes the left-wing scene, ravers, punks and families; many have been coming for ten or twenty years, and if you head out on your own, you'll quickly find people to hang out with. To cool off, there's a little river on site.

Check first

  • Politics is part of the deal here: the house rules call for a clear yes, photos on the dancefloors are off-limits, and national flags stay at home. If that's too political for you, you won't be happy here.
  • Police run checks around the site, plain-clothes officers included – put someone sober behind the wheel. The camp has compost toilets but no electricity; showers cost extra and are only on the festival grounds. Dogs stay at home.
