Kendal Calling is the festival for people who want to sing along to their favourite songs, not just listen to them. The main stage sits at the foot of a natural slope in Lowther Deer Park, looking out over the Lake District fells, and you get a good view both up front and from high up the hill. In front of the sound desk people jump, behind it families sit on blankets and chairs, and during some sets kids, parents and grandads dance together. Most people have been before, and many book for next year before the line-up is out.
Once the headliners finish at eleven, many head into the Lost Eden woods: fairy lights and art among the trees, silent disco until three, fire pits where people warm up or lie back and look at the stars.

Check first
- The car stays in the car park; from there you carry or pull everything across fields and hills to your camp, sometimes for up to an hour, and in the wet the trolleys tip over in the mud.
- In the general camping the party runs round the clock, and hot showers cost extra there; if you want to sleep, go for The Shire, Quiet Camping or one of the paid upgrade camps with their own arena entrance.
Right for you
- For crews who belt out every chorus, would rather dance in the woods with headphones after midnight than sleep, and take families in the crowd in their stride.
