Since 1999, Indian Spirit has kept the spirit of the Goa parties alive, these days on the fields between Eldena and Glaisin. The Sun Stage stands under a giant canopy and books the big names; beneath the fly agarics of the Mushroom Stage, things get dark and fast. In between, fire shows and acrobat parades move across the site, people dance quietly in the fire tent at night, and during the day the yoga and craft classes are well attended. Just under a third of the guests come from abroad.

The crowd is up for debate: old Goa hands miss the hippie family and find the main stage too commercial. People at their first psytrance festival, on the other hand, often find it magical. It still stays surprisingly relaxed: there’s hardly any pushing, some people put their camping chair right in the middle of the dancefloor, and young adults dance next to people in their late sixties.

Check first

• Expect long walks: guests often need 30 to 45 minutes from their tent to the main stage, and the camping ticket costs extra per person.
• When you leave, the police run checks at the only exit, and anyone without a sober driver is stuck there for hours.

Right for you

• You want to dance for days, with a big show of lasers, fire and decor, and you’d rather have comfort than hippie romance. If the main stage is too mainstream for you, you’ll find your dancefloor at the Moon or Mushroom Stage.
