Herzberg is less a concert line-up than a temporary village on the slope below the castle, and many people live in it for a whole week. The music isn’t just on the stages: people jam outside tents, at the wine stall and by the pizza oven, and if you get stuck at a session on your way to the main stage, you simply skip the star. On stage, bands often play an hour and a half to two hours instead of barely 45 minutes.
It doesn’t get rough here: no fights, hardly any shoving, and strangers help out with a tarp, a jump start or a spot under their gazebo. Hippie doesn’t mean sober, though – people smoke weed and drink openly, and it stays peaceful all the same. And when it pours, the slope turns into a slide that barefoot people, kids and rollators get through together.

Check first
- The campsite is on a slope and your car stays by your tent: bring levelling wedges, and after rain the drive out turns into a slide. Plan on cash: there’s no cash machine on site, the car pass is cash only, and many stalls don’t take cards.
Right for you
- For crews who drift along rather than ticking off a schedule, and whose day is made by kids, old rockers and the session at the next tent. If you come alone, you’ll often find company here quickly.
