When Bernese heroes like Patent Ochsner play, the party tents empty out and the whole slope sings along to every line.

Gurtenfestival is Bern's big reunion on its home mountain, the Güsche: up by funicular or a half-hour walk through the woods, with the Old Town and the Alps behind the stages. There has been no camping since 2023: most people come from the area, run into people they know everywhere and sleep in their own beds.
The line-up puts Lorde or Sean Paul next to German rap and Swiss favourites. At night the party moves into the DJ tents, whose bass rolls over the city until five in the morning. Since 27,000 guests a day have been allowed up, regulars find it more crowded in the evenings.

Check first
- Multi-day passes usually sell out before the festival and can't be split between friends. If you're not from the area, book a bed early or pitch a tent down by the Aare, and you can only bring half a litre of drink.
Right for you
- You want big pop and rap names, singing along in Bernese German and dancing until the last train, but you'd rather sleep in a bed than in a tent. Families come too: children up to twelve only pay a fee.
