Here the village itself becomes the festival: Cem Soldos closes its streets, and the neighbours pour the drinks.

Bons Sons doesn't happen next to a village but right in the middle of one: for four days Cem Soldos near Tomar is closed off, and the stages stand in lanes, on squares, in gardens and among olive trees. The organiser is the village association, residents and volunteers do almost everything except the music, and in cafés and stalls the neighbours serve you moelas and Mouchão. What the festival earns flows back into the village. It feels like a visit, not an invasion.
The music is Portuguese across all styles: with choirs the audience sings along to melodies it has only just heard, Them Flying Monkeys get crowd surfers, and in front of a lone reader with a guitar it goes completely quiet. In between there are short films and workshops, and toddlers stand next to older neighbours in front of the stages.

Check first
- Expect heat and crowds: shade is scarce at some stages, and the village squares get too tight for popular concerts. The camp is a ten to fifteen minute walk away, with cold showers, dry toilets and no electricity; guests found showers and toilets too few.
Right for you
- You go for the feeling, not the poster, you like drifting through the lanes, and you party with families and villagers right next to the mosh pit. No need to rush: concerts are scheduled so that hardly anything overlaps.
