Deichbrand is northern Germany’s summer get-together: four days on a flat airfield near Nordholz, with the mudflats not far away. Founded by young people from Cuxhaven, it is still a home game today: most guests come from Lower Saxony and Bremen, and you’ll run into people you know at every corner of the site.

The heart of it is the camp: flunkyball as soon as you arrive, Bluetooth speakers turned all the way up, and when a brass band marches through the rows of tents, a conga line tags along behind. By day there’s also a Ferris wheel, beach volleyball, digger driving and poetry slam; hidden gems away from the big names play in the Palastzelt tent and at the Hafenbar.

  • Choose your spot carefully: the regular camp and Camp South party deep into the night, in the Green Camp you’ll sleep in peace, and you can only get onto Camp Central with a booking.
  • Allow hours of buffer for the journey and pack for both kinds of weather: rain turns the field into a mud track, sun turns it into a dust cloud.
