Brutal Assault takes place in Josefov, an 18th-century military fortress, and you notice it everywhere: the Octagon stage in a tight forecourt, bars in the casemates, a horror cinema inside the walls. The bill puts Gojira or Mastodon next to bands hardly anyone knows, and some of them don't go on until two in the morning.
On top of that, there's a whole world beside the stages: a Mad Max-style post-apocalyptic crew revs its engines in the evenings, and in the underground Pit of Doom you can get properly spooked. The crowd comes from half of Europe and further afield, looks out for each other in the pit, and at Gutalax a portaloo may well sail over everyone's heads. The price of popularity: you'll get stuck at bottlenecks in the evening, and when the sun is blazing, the fire brigade with its hose gets the biggest cheer.

Check first
- Camping and parking aren't included in the festival pass, and the camps differ: Silent Camp Cerberus is quiet at night, and from Beherit it's a 20 to 25-minute walk to the grounds. Things get stolen from tents, so keep your valuables in a locker.
