Exams done, off to the sea: Boardmasters is the Reading of the South West, five days with the Atlantic within walking distance.

On the site above Watergate Bay almost everyone is 16 to 18 and celebrating the end of school; if you're over 25, you'll feel old fast. The line-up is carried by big names from Florence + The Machine to Fatboy Slim. The sea is what makes the difference: when the sun's out, the arena and the campsite empty towards Watergate Bay and Porth, and anyone who can't take the heat, the noise or the lack of sleep any more watches the surfers from the beach.
The surf competition where it all began in 1981 is free to watch at Fistral Beach, a 20-minute bus ride away, and a sideshow for most. Many find it more relaxed than Reading, but evenings get rough: on the campsite, things get thrown at tents and sometimes fists fly, and in 2024 a crush in front of The Point put guests in hospital.

Check first
- The last night is notorious: tents get slashed and cleared out. Keep your valuables on you and pitch close to your group.
- Phone signal is hit and miss, so agree meeting points in advance; get picked up in Newquay rather than at the car park, where until 2024 parents sat in traffic for hours.
Right for you
- You've just finished school, you're coming as a big group of friends and you want big names, camp evenings and beach days. If you're in your early twenties, get a ticket without camping for Friday to Sunday: the crowd is older and more mixed then.
